Overreliance on cultivated material of hybrid origin has obscured the distinctiveness of D. crenata and D. scabra and led to misidentification errors in a recent phylogenetic analysis. Deutzia crenata is the correct identity of naturalized North American Deutzia populations, per Brock (2022).
See Brock (2022) for discussion of the taxonomy and mistaken application and confusion between D. crenata and D. scabra, per Weakley's Flora (2022)
