Tepals are upright at full flowering (vs. those of Z. atamasca are spreading), per Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Georgia (Chafin, 2007).

Flowers of Z. simpsonii are smaller than those of Z. atamasca, per Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Georgia (Chafin, 2007).

Similar to Z. atamasca but with the pistil shorter than the stamens, per Wildflowers of the Eastern United States (Duncan & Duncan, 1999).
