Var. tainturieri (with fruits glabrous) and var. dasycarpum (with fruits pubescent) are sometimes distinguished (see synonymy). They have largely overlapping distributions, and seem unlikely to warrant taxonomic status, but need additional study, per Weakley's Flora (2023).
