Dig deeper at SERNEC, a consortium of southeastern herbaria.
Although thought to be related to S. gracillima/austrina, S. simulans has a much more robust gestalt, shorter stature, and different habitat and range. In the field it looks most like S. uliginosa, but differs in its glabrous inflorescence, larger involucral bracts, and pubescent seeds, as well as habitat. If a search such as "Carex leptalea var. leptalea" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "Carex leptalea".
Or, to minimize chances of a misspelling, try just "Carex le".
Less is more: If "pencil flower" doesn't deliver the results you want, try "pencil".
